Important results from the project
The aim of the study was, based on the results of the feasibility study of an Extended Gate in Gothenburg, and on the basis that it has been shown that the concept is cost neutral/profitable in Gothenburg, make a potential analysis of similar concepts in selected Swedish port cities and to develop indicators for a rough assessment of when the concept may be profitable / applicable. The goal of the pilot study is to generate knowledge about the potential and the feasibility of a concept for transport to and from the ports through the urban area of Sweden
Expected long term effects
The benefit of the concept will be reduced number of truck movements through the city, as well as opportunities for the port terminal to reduce peaks. In order to achieve profitability in the scheme the conjunction of the following characteristics is required: Relatively high mileage through densely populated area s Sufficiently large flows of units to get a good utilization of reach-stackers or other technical solutions in the Extended Gates terminal Deficiencies in the capacity of the port terminal for reception and delivery of containers to/from vehicles (ie congestion)
Approach and implementation
The study was conducted in October-December 2015 in the form of a joint project between CLOSER, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and Logistics Landscapers. The study was funded by Vinnova. The project has been conducted as an explorative interview study based on a sample of Swedish cities with ports on the basis of size and location, with a spread on the number of handled units from 25,000 to 300,000. The study is based on official statistics, where such was available, as well as statistics and numbers from the participating ports.
