Important results from the project
VIS developed and tested a model for the carrying outof diploma work at companies. Evaluation of organization was part of the objective. VIS coordinated and acted as a link between school and company. Our conclusion is that an intermediary is vital for execution and long-term sustainability. The long-term purpose - to generate interest in transport infrastructure - is difficult to evaluate, but through the activities where companies, InfraSweden and Vinnova were presented, both students and teachers have improved their insight into and knowledge about the field.
Expected long term effects
Survey answers showed a satisfaction among the students to have had their opportunity to interact with the industry, perform measurements at a well-equipped lab and visit factories. This increases the probability of university studies relevant to transport infrastructure, which supports the long-term objective. The companies were highly satisfied with the students´ work, the projects held a quite high standard and the companies had direct use of some of the results. These effects raise the probability of the companies continued participation.
Approach and implementation
The project were mainly carried out August-June. One conclusion is that companies, teachers and students should be contacted already during the end of grade two to ensure participation and sufficient information ahead of the diploma works. It was difficult to recruit companies in spite of personal contacts. Management and HR regularly got involved which delayed the engagement of relevant operations department and assignment of supervisor. This was time-consuming and future support from trade association or InfraSweden companies would be of great value.
