Important results from the project
The purpose was to verify the feasibility and to prepare for a R&D project developing the concept with integrated optical fiber sensors in high-voltage components. This has been done by performing basic process development and testing which shows that the concepts are technically valid , and prototype manufacturing in ABB´s factory show the possibility of industrial integration of the fiber. A good consortium with both subcontractor to ABB and end customers in the form of a power company is designed for a R&D projects. In summary, there are good reasons for continue with an R&D project.
Expected long term effects
The expected effect was to have verified the technical viability of fiber optics in high-voltage components, as well as identified and engaged a consortium for a full-scale project. The integration of fiber optics in high-voltage components has been demonstrated to be technical feasibly. Very valuable knowledge about materials and process technology has also been developed and special focus areas for a coming R&D project has been identified. A good consortium and plan for future development exist.
Approach and implementation
The work was carried out in a number of WPs: * Process development and materials development for the integration of fiber optics. * Prototyping of industrial process equipment of high voltage components. * Optical, mechanical and electrical tests on prototypes and test units. * Creating of consortium to full-scale projects. Materials, processes and manufacturing methods with good potential have been developed and lab tests showed good results and verified feasibility. A power company and subcontractor are committed to R &D project. The good results motivate for a continuation.
