Important results from the project
The purpose of this project was to develop a prototype of a smartphone app to help persons with insulin-treated diabetes achieving a more even and better blood glucose control with fewer dangerously low and high glucose values. The app communicates with third-party continuous glucose sensors and, utilizing algorithms developed at Lund University and specifically tailored to each individual, calculates the expected future glucose level, thereby enhancing the user´s ability to make a sound decision regarding the appropriate insulin dose to administer.
Expected long term effects
An Android app was developed in this project. The next stage is to validate the functionality and performance in a clinical trial. The risk of developing serious health complications, such as cardiovascular diseases, in diabetes is highly correlated to poor glucose control. Our expectation is that the users will reduce the amount of high and low glucose values by utilizing the decision support provided by the app, with improved quality of life as additional outcome.
Approach and implementation
The user will be able to see the current glucose level as well as the expected development for the upcoming next hours. At insulin dosing or meal intake, the user may simulate the effect of different insulin doses in order to determine which dose to be most suitable to achieve the glucose level of choice. The app transmits all data to a database server, which also performs all heavy-duty calculations in order to minimize the impact on phone performance.
