Important results from the project
The project´s overall goal was to develop and distribute a comprehensive match file between patent and trademark information and organizational information. The match files consist of links between unique patent/trademark identifiers and unique organization numbers of Swedish firms. Patent data has been matched and updated 3 times. Trademark data contains both Swedish (PRV) and European Trademark data (EUIPO). Trademark data from PRV is updated twice. All databases are publicly available at the SHOF data center.
Expected long term effects
This project created databases that allows researchers to link Patent and Trademark data to Swedish firms. This allows us to study innovation patterns and their determinants. We are currently aware that researchers and students use this database in their research. The data are also used by Swedish authorities such as the Swedish Agency for Growth Policy Analysis. Three reports are also written to explain the data and show the pattern of patenting and trademark use of Swedish firms.
Approach and implementation
The project focus has been on matching the names of patent assignees and trademark applicants to the Organization number. The process included automatic matching and manual matching by a third-party data provider. We also manually checked the data to ensure the quality of data. We have been able to match more than 90% 0f patents and trademarks
