Important results from the project

The project "Own home for all" aim to demonstrate the strength and innovative power of collaboration between municipality, civil society and individuals, as well as to scale up the Egnahemsfabriken´s methods in a collective area, which has been objective. Starting new construction of affordable homes and giving home builders tools for co-creative design. All three of these objective have been achieved to a large extent. Together with lenders, we have also partially achieved the goal of designing new financial solutions for self-builders.

Expected long term effects

Through the project, Egnahemsfabriken and Orust municipality wanted to demonstrate cooperation between municipality and civil society as a way of providing a third way to solve the housing problem. The target group is those who want to create their own home through their own work, with a focus on working with groups who have difficulty entering the housing market. The municipality also wanted to test the project as a way to get year-round residents. Despite the goal of creating cheap housing, it is difficult for them without money, but the group is mixed and it will be year-round residences.

Approach and implementation

The project started with finding interested people in the target group, who wanted to build their own homes. Information meetings were organized and a group was selected, that worked out a proposal for the design of the area. In January 2023, Huseby Egnahemsförening was formed and received a direct land allocation. Despite guidance and an existing detailed plan, the participants have at times experienced the process as long and difficult. It has also required new ways of working with an association instead a traditional developer. Good cooperation was the key to complete the project.
