Project duration December 2021 - April 2025
Status Ongoing

Purpose and goal

The project objectives are to study and further develop today´s fiber optic sensor solutions to survive harsh environments for aerospace applications. The project will focus to increase and strengthen our capability in the areas of multi-functional sensing systems as well as high temperature fiber applications. Applications such as, temperature, overheating, fuel level and leakage in aircraft will be explored with the focus to meet the aviation industry´s requirements for environmental durability.

Expected effects and result

The project is enabling a broader cooperation between Saab and the fiber sensor manufacturer FBGS for optical fiber applications. The project is a great opportunity to mature the product offer and the manufacturing capabilities for high temperature and muti-functional measurement systems for aerospace applications leading to an increased Saab fiber optical sensor system competitiveness. During the project, we will develop our understanding of sensor-fiber manufacturing and how the manufacturing process limitations affect the system performance and measurement accuracy.

Planned approach and implementation

Saab will focus on the system integration and driving the development with focus to aerospace customer application needs and requirements. Saab will also be responsible for performing tests in relevant environments, e.g. regarding temperature and vibration The partner FBGS will focus on developing the sensor manufacturing and the fiber protective encapsulation to cope with aerospace application requirements.
