Important results from the project
The project goal is to develop and demonstrate a low cost night vision system for automotive use based on Si/SiGe quantum well bolometers. The system will improve the driver´s ability to detect humans and animals during night time driving and thereby reduce the number of accidents.
Expected long term effects
With a low cost night vision system the number of accidents involvning pedestrians is expected to be reduced significantly. With expected changes in EU legislation, there is a big potential for wide spread use of this type of system in automobiles.
Approach and implementation
Results from previous research projects will be used to develop a full size detector array. Additionally, a new read out circuit (ROIC) will be developed to fully exploit the performance of the detector elements. The project is coordinated with a Norwegian initiative to produce the detector array on an industrial scale.
