Important results from the project
The aim of the project was to develop a new method based on precision fermentation to biologically produce labeled lipids for use in research and development. Successfully implemented targeted genetic modification and optimisation of the biosynthesis has laid a stable foundation for continued development of the method and future scaling, further optimisation and commercialisation.
Expected long term effects
The project has resulted in a successful genetic modification of bacterial strains for the biological production of labeled lipids. These advances enable the further development of precision fermentation techniques with the aim of achieving higher efficiency and flexibility in a more large-scale production. Expected results include enabled production of labeled lipids that are not available on the market as well as improved and more environmentally friendly production of specific lipids with broad areas of application in the life science field.
Approach and implementation
The project was structured in several steps, starting with genetic modification of several bacterial strains to enable bacterial production of selected lipids. This was followed by optimisation of production conditions, small-scale extraction and lipid analysis, adjustment and optimisation of production conditions. Continuous analyses were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the method and improve the process. Next steps also include external collaborations for more advanced characterisation of the produced molecules ensure both high quality and scalability.
