Important results from the project
The aim of the prestudy was to investigate the potential of a new generation of materials for wear parts for excavators and the goal was to perform successful casting trials where the attractive material properties were preserved from laboratory scale to full-scale process. The goal was fulfilled with respect to the casting process where each process step was possible to perform in a controlled way. The material properties, however, were not fully reproduced.
Expected long term effects
The results show that production of the new material is possible within the frame of CWP´s standard production process without investments in new equipment. The achieved hardness and wear resistance were even higher than expected, whereas the ductility was not satisfactory. Therefore, a modified production process must be developed in order to make a relevant estimate of the full potential of the material.
Approach and implementation
Two series of full-scale casting trials with the new material were performed in production environment. Careful evaluation of several process parameters was performed. The produced material was evaluated according to chemical analysis, microstructure, and mechanical properties, and its future potential for the application was estimated.
