Important results from the project
The purpose was to solve tasks in 3 important areas to implement new laser-based scanning technology for quality assurance of welded joints. These were: 1. DATA The new system measures with higher precision and more data. This created a need for solutions in data management and in the fact that components risk being rejected. 2. IMPLEMENTATION Implementation tests should be done. 3. QUALITY CONTROL How should quality work be organized. Scanning (procedures), data: type and quantity, are solved. But the technologies need to be used in parallel for some time and more research is needed.
Expected long term effects
The project has developed and verified routines for scanning and verified accuracy of the measurement system. Implementation tests have been made, which showed different results for different components. Some tests went very well while others needed special adjustment. This could be linked to different geometries and possibilities for improvement have been identified. The laser scanning technology has developed during the project and today it is possible with fast scanning. The technology is now expected to begin to be implemented in industry, in different ways.
Approach and implementation
The project started 2018-04-01, had 5 work packages and was planned to run 2.75 years but due to COVID there were delays and the project was extended to 3 years, to 2021-03-31. There were both many and large tasks to solve within the same project. Developing fatigue prediction methods based on scanned geometry was far more complicated than expected, this is a project in itself. The same assessment can be made about developing a new quality SYSTEM (as opposed to a quality measurement method). Still, a very interesting project and many good results.
