Important results from the project
The outcome from this pilot study was primary to increase the knowledge about the possibilities to develop and manufacture the next generation of steel for dies for die casting through additive techniques. Therefore a number of issues were addressed which resulted in a number of deliveries in the project. Generally, the objectives were met and the possibilities of 3D-printed tools were shown. The pilot study led to a number of new research areas where the possibility of material properties and tailored cooling channels are central.
Expected long term effects
Is additive manufacturing a method to count on when it comes to high pressure die casting tools? The project has shown that additive manufacturing can produce tool inserts for high pressure die casting tools. Optimal material properties, heat treatment including related material analyzes and material models for thermal fatigue are examples of areas that need to be more studied in order to reach the full potential of the method. Also guidelines and design support need to be developed to support an implementation in the industry.
Approach and implementation
The project work up was divided into studies of current status and demonstrators, with subsequent analysis. The studies were related to analyze the business opportunities for 3D printed tools, environmental issues and life cycle. The project was implemented and executed with great commitment by the industry in terms of both trials and evaluation.
