Important results from the project

The project, NeighbourFood aimed to upgrade an existing smart urban farming solution with a high technical readiness level (TRL) to a digitally-enabled service model to ensure sustainable food supply in the aftermath of Covid-19. Smart urban farming is an enabler to ensure constant access to nutritious leafy vegetables and herbs at a very local level for the citizens, and the cluster aimed to develop innovative business models to accelerate a strategic development against a crisis like Covid-19 with help of Hyperlocal local production solutions, via Farming as a Service.

Expected long term effects

The project addressed one of the last limitation factors farming in a service model. A solution to be offered to customers such as retailers, restaurants and housing associations in a plug-and-play format at hyper local level. The solution was introduced to the market with a PoC in two Swedish retail supermarkets in Gothenburg and Linköping. It was a solid step in further development of the solution in a holistic perspective for applied use of AI functionalities to develop a niche Swedish innovation and capitalize on its potential, on a global scale.

Approach and implementation

To accomplish our goals, we catalyzed the core company progress by establishment a testbed in Swegreen´s existing R&D farm in Stockholm, prototyping of an automated small module and unit, analysed the the captured data which was captured by help of IoT and developed an automated control system for remote farm management model driven by AI. The Farming as a Service model for integration into sharing economy platforms has also been developed by the cluster. It was introduced to Sharing Cities Sweden platform and digital twin of their testbed - as a neighbour to neighbour (P2P) solution.
