Important results from the project

The purpose of the project has been to map the needs that exist in terms of data for freight traffic flows, as well as to match these against what we estimate can be obtained from analysis of mobile network data. In general, figuring out what type of data is desired for which application is a complex problem, as today´s analyzes use the data that is available now, which is often the output of the Samgods model. This without assessing the need for new input, e.g. in the form of mobile network data.

Expected long term effects

As a result of the project, the results of needs and mapping of what has been tried in other countries have been described. We have described a technique for producing estimates of freight vehicle flows on the road. We see a potential to use mobile network data to generate data on freight vehicle flows, although the picture will not be 100% complete without the use of other data sources as well. The effect of this is that we expect that technology to do this will be developed, tested, evaluated and validated.

Approach and implementation

The project has been carried out with the help of interviews and literature studies of national and international literature. The interviews have provided the basis for describing areas of use, examples of analyzes and today´s need for freight vehicle flow data. The literature search has shown that relatively little has been published about techniques and the use of mobile network data for estimating freight vehicle flows, while what has been identified has formed the basis for proposals on how freight vehicle data can be generated.
