Important results from the project

Through a series of meetings with reindeer herding communities (RHC) and Boliden, the project has identified the needs of RHC re new methods, data and knowledge. Based on this, the project has co-produced unique mappings of reindeer husbandry and other land uses over time, developed new methods for inventorying, mapping and calculating lichen biomass, as well as new methods for assessing and calculating cumulative impacts of other land uses on reindeer husbandry. The information provides a new basis for dialog and reduced conflicts between RHC, mining industries and other land users.

Expected long term effects

The project has co-produced data, knowledge, methods and results that contribute to improved dialog and reduced conflicts between reindeer herding communities, the mining industry and other land users. Together with new methods for inventorying, mapping and calculating the biomass of the ground lichen and new methods for assessing and calculating cumulative impact on reindeer husbandry, such data contribute to improved planning and decisions in future environmental impact assessments. The project is further strengthened in the framework of ongoing related projects.

Approach and implementation

The project has conducted more than 30 full-day meetings with Gällivare, Malå, Mausjaure reindeer herding communities and Boliden to identify needs, carry out mapping and present and discuss new methods and partial results. Active participation of project partners and close cooperation with sister projects is necessary to develop relevant and useful methods and results. Data has been collected and made available via the Sami villages´ GIS program, RenGIS for use and communication with mining industry and other stakeholders. The mapping has formed the basis for advanced analyses.
