Important results from the project
The primary goal of the project was to demonstrate, in a challenging environment, the feasibility and power of an alternative localization sensor based on passive observations of signals from existing, commercial cellular wireless infrastructure, and to achieve performance beyond that which other research groups had managed in comparable environments.
Expected long term effects
The technical results of the project yielded in accepted publications in leading scientific journals and conference proceedings, with more under work currently. As an ancillary benefit, the project served to develop two industrial Ph.D. students with one completed and defended dissertation and the large body of work for another. Additionally, ties between Swedish industry and academia were strengthened by years of collaboration in the project.
Approach and implementation
While the overall project plan and major milestones were mostly held to, there were some differences in strategy in execution as the project evolved, and the overall time plan was extended. The millimeter-wave work package was eliminated and resources re-allocated to other work packages, and the truck-mounted demonstrator did not come to fruition. The vehicle demonstrator was successful, but with clear opportunities for further refinement and improvement in future work.
