Purpose and goal
The aim is to develop a microcalorimetric-based medical device that can detect, identify and determine the antibiotic sensitivity of microorganisms directly from a clinical sample. The goals: - Address the large and unmet need for improved joint and implant infection diagnostics. - Lower morbidity and mortality through faster and more accurate diagnosis of joint and implant infections - Reduce healthcare costs through fewer hospital days and lower treatment costs. - Reduce antibiotic-resistant development through improved antimicrobial stewardship.
Expected effects and result
Faster diagnosis: reduction of time to diagnosis from 14 days to 5 hours for implant-related infections. Earlier treatment, which leads to improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare costs. Improved treatment results of the infections that reduce the risk of complications and the development of chronic infections with high morbidity and mortality. Contribute to the fight against antimicrobial resistance by ensuring that patients are only treated with the antibiotics they need.
Planned approach and implementation
The project is structured as a collaboration between: Karolinska Institutet - who provides expertise in clinical microbiology and antibiotic diagnostics Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset provides expertise in precision medicine and diagnostics of joint and prosthetic infections Symcel AB provides expertise in the development and commercialization of diagnostic solutions
