Important results from the project

Medtech4Health has strived to elevate the national medical technology research and innovation system. The program has created a network of actors in health care, academia, idea-driven organizations and in business. Together, the actors have identified and supplemented existing initiatives, strengthened companies through calls for proposals (R&I projects) and through knowledge-enhancing efforts, as well as initiated strategic national projects - with regional anchoring - to remove obstacles and increase the pace of implementation of medical technology in healthcare.

Expected long term effects

Participation in R&I projects has led to increased and deepened collaboration between public actors (including healthcare), institutes, universities and companies. The projects have stimulated interdisciplinary collaborations which have contributed to knowledge transfer to the companies. The number of unique actors increased during the program´s second stage, which was mainly due to an increase in the number of SMEs in the network. The program has further led to a sector mobilization and has contributed to increasing awareness of the benefits of medical technology.

Approach and implementation

The six-year evaluation established that the program´s activities were mainly effective. A well-balanced combination of initiatives, i.e. calls for proposals/R&I projects and strategic projects (including knowledge-enhancing activities), has well reflected identified needs of the sector. With its activities anchored in the regions, the program serves a much-needed role as both a knowledge builder through events, courses and project support, and as an enabler of funding in medical device development phases where the alternative funding opportunities are few.
