Important results from the project
The objective the project was to investigate the possibilities of rebuilding Innventia´s pilot paper machine FEX into a test bed for the production of, both in machine and cross direction, highly extensible paper. The goal was to develop a detailed plan on how various process concepts can be implemented, and determine which investments are required. In addition, the formation of a consortium regarding research, development and demonstration activities at the test bed, and the formation of a consortium of interested companies had to be investigated. Both goals were achieved.
Expected long term effects
The investigation concludes that the implementation of several process ideas is possible. In addition, there is considerable interest from industry for the production of highly extensible paper products. Even parts of ongoing research and innovation projects, such as VINN excellence center BiMaC innovation, can be linked to the planned production of the highly extensible paper. Activity producing larger amounts of highly extensible paper in pilot scale at FEX can commence during 2015, provided that the appropriate funding for the implementation of the process ideas is in place.
Approach and implementation
In the beginning, various process ideas were summarized in a literature review. Some of those ideas were identified as particularly promising. For these ideas, a planning and investment plan for the necessary modifications and rebuilts of the pilot paper machine FEX at Innventia was compiled. In addition, a proposal for a research, development and demonstration structure, and industrial consortium of interesting companies regarding the planned activities related to the production of highly-extensible paper was formulated.
