Important results from the project
The project wanted to find new forms for the city to interact with gardening in public spaces, calculate its value and have a blossoming relationship with urban gardeners. With workshops, dialogue with urban gardeners, study visits and coaching, the project has managed to lift the value of urban gardening in Malmö. Responsibility for gardening in public places is placed at the streets and parks department, where they have an urban gardening strategy and coordinator. Urban gardening associations have created an umbrella association as an effective way of cooperating with the city.
Expected long term effects
Malmö’s politicians have begun to understand the value of urban gardening. The technical committee have approved Malmö’s strategy for urban gardening. Both the technical and environmental committee have visited urban gardening sites. The city now has a functioning organisational model to meet urban gardeners varying needs with an urban gardening coordinator. There is now an umbrella association to ease cooperation between the city and gardening associations as well as to develop business opportunities, such as frame agreements and partnership agreements.
Approach and implementation
The project has run for over 2 years, and finished March 2019. It has been a positive experience being project manager, with good support from Vinnova. It has been positive with a multi-departmental project group, with representatives from three departments as well as Malmö university. Contact between project participants has worked well and everyone has contributed with their skills and experience. Reporting to Vinnova has worked without a problem. The urban gardening associations have appreciated the support the project has offered.
