Important results from the project

In MACRO3 the focus has been on development of source separating wastewater systems in cities. A number of cities/regional actors (Helsingborg, Stockholm, Region Gotland and Södertälje) have collaborated with research institutions such as SLU, RISE and LTU. In step 3, the goal was to reach an implementation decision for systems in Stockholm and Visby. An important aspect to achieve this is to be able to take part in experiences and lessons learned from Helsingborg. The long-term goal is to jointly develop knowledge to implement source separating wastewater systems for cities.

Expected long term effects

Results linked to the short-term effect targets, is that the expansion of source-sorting wastewater systems continues. The system in Helsingborg for 320 apartments is commissioned and experiences from planning, construction and start-up are documented. This knowledge has formed the basis for continued work in Visborg (Visby) and Norra Djurgårdsstaden (Stockholm). Region Gotland has taken an investment decision, while urban development in Stockholm has been paused. New collaboration projects have started to continue strengthen national and international collaboration.

Approach and implementation

Project partners are municipalities, utilities, research institutions, an industry organization and a developer. Development of source separated wastewater systems requires a shifted organization and responsibility rather than advanced technical solutions. The constellation of partners and studies/documentation that the project has produced have met this need. The project has also contributed to identifying further issues that need further reserach, such as different treatment methods adapted to sorted wastewater flows with qualities other than mixed wastewater.
