Machining of AM components (MacAM)

Reference number
Coordinator SWERIM AB - Swerim AB, Kista
Funding from Vinnova SEK 680 000
Project duration October 2019 - June 2021
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Metallic material
Call Metallic materials - Non-thematic call 2019

Important results from the project

The purpose with the MacAM project was to create improved machining of hard and wear resistant AM materials. The goals were to identify suitable methodologies for milling and grinding and describe these in an open guideline. And to distribute this via seminars and homepage. All goals are fulfilled new methodologies have been developed for both milling and grinding. A Guideline has been developed and presented in the final seminar for the project. It can also be downloaded from “www.swerim.se/publikationer”.

Expected long term effects

The results from the project are that two alternative inserts for milling, and different grinding wheels, can be recommended for processing AM-materials with high hardness and carbide content. Recommendations have been compiled into a guideline that can be downloaded from “Swerim.se/publikationer”. The expected effects of this guideline are that Swedish industry will be able to better machine AM-components with high hardness and improve on the AM-process to reach improved machinability. It is also expected that more companies will choose to implement AM in their manufacturing.

Approach and implementation

MacAM has been divided into five work packages. WP1 Design and manufacture of AM materials. WP2 Planning of tests. WP3 Machining and analysis (milling and grinding). WP4 Dissemination of results (conferences, seminars, guideline). WP5 Administration and reporting. The project needed a prolongation due to Covid19, but apart from that the work packages and the project work fulfilled the results and deliveries, which has led to a guideline for the industry in Sweden.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
