Important results from the project
The purpose with the project LoV-IoT was to explore the possibilities with using sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) to develop the environmental monitoring of air and water in cities. The emissions to air and water needs to be monitored to be able to put in actions and in that way reduce the negative impact on human health and on the environment which the emissions have. The project has developed new methods to monitor air quality and water by using IoT and sensors. The project has also identified new areas of use.
Expected long term effects
The project has showed that there is a potential to develop air and water monitoring in cities by using sensors and IoT. Sensor testing was conducted in Gothenburg, Uppsala and in Santiago, Chile. The tests showed that the air quality sensors offer possibilities, but a good knowledge about the sensors as well as accurate quality control is needed. The tests of sensors in storm water wells showed that there is a big potential to measure overflow by using IoT, since IoT enables actual measurements instead of modelling.
Approach and implementation
The LoV-IoT project was a collaboration between cities, the private sector and research institutes. The project had all in all 16 partners. The city of Gothenburg was coordinator and it was from the city the requirements for the project was formed. This fact led to the project being steered based on the requirements and the project results can be directly utilized by the participating cities. The development of the environmental monitoring was formed around open data and open source solutions. Citizen science and co-creation were also areas which were explored within the LoVIoT project.
