Important results from the project
The project aims at LiU´s participation in the iGEM competition. This has the goal to disseminate information about synthetic biology and that students will get an opportunity to apply their knowledge. A project idea is to be selected and carried out in order to be presented at the European final in Lyon, France. The LiU project was to create a biosensor that can detect one specific food antigen. This biosensor comprises of a physical component (an optic measuring instrument) and a biochemical component (antibody-antigen-complex). A biosensor was created presented in Lyon.
Expected long term effects
A nonprofit association, LiU iGEM, was started in order to increase knowledge about synthetic biology for the public and also for the students. The project group has created a basis for future iGEM teams at Linköping University, both organizationally and practically. We have pursued the project including presentation in the European championship in Lyon. This resulted in a bronze medal. We have designed and created an operational electrical biosensor. The biochemical component only obtained limited functionality. How to improve on this has been described in a project report.
Approach and implementation
During the spring a group of students were gathered in order to start up the association LiU iGEM to use as a basis for the project. A project idea was created as well as a time plan. During the summer months, June-August, the project group worked in the lab in order to implement the project idea. During the autumn the project group planned for the European final and to complete the project. Presentations were also held for the general public and students. After the European final a project report was created and the group also started announcing for new members for next year´s iGEM competition.
