Important results from the project
The project has developed a liquid crystal based neutral density filter enabling electronic control of the transmittance for augmented reality (AR) eyewear. The filter is based on LC-Tec’s PolarView ® technology with added new functionalities required for AR eyewear. The developed filter technology has segmented active area, curved form factor, sufficient mechanical integrity and optimized drive protocol with respect to viewing angles.
Expected long term effects
The developed technology enables LC-Tec to offer a filter that is suitable for the AR-eyewear market. The effect of this is the potential for growth in the next coming years as the AR-market matures.
Approach and implementation
The project has been divided into 5 work packages: 1) segmented filters, 2) biaxially curved filters, 3) mechanical integrity, 4) optimized drive protocol for AR eyewear, and 5) integration of the solutions from previous work packages into demonstrators. The majority of the work has been done by experts, engineers and operators at LC-Tec’s facilities in Borlänge. Some services have been subcontracted when we have not had the specific capability at LC-Tec.
