Important results from the project

One of the major goals of the project was to reduce the weight by more than 20% and it has been done by more than 60%. The cost was more difficult to calculate as the demonstrator was made as a one-piece manufactured part with a lot of manual work. The environmental impact has also been reduced with the demonstrator.

Expected long term effects

The weight loss was greater than expected before the project, a simplified environmental analysis also shows positive results. The effect of this and the possibility of optimising the structure and look at material systems in a more detailed way means that a new proposal for a larger project will be submitted to LIGHTers´ call for proposals, which closes in September.

Approach and implementation

The project has been carried out in six work packages, where a design review first was made of the existing solution for choosing an appropriate part as a demonstrator. After that, the work focused on reducing the weight and then manufacturing and assembling the demonstrator for evaluation. In parallel with this, a simplified environmental analysis was made as well as a rough estimation of weight savings on more parts and the underlying structure.
