Important results from the project

Our goal has been to develop, test and verify factory prototypes with project test group in Kenya. We have developed electrical system, carried out design prototype tests in Kenya focusing on how lamp is used and mounted/carried, in collaboration with industrial designer and local organizations. We have tested design prototypes not factory prototypes, due to a change of producer, and gained fruitful knowledge. We are in contact with an established distributer of lamps for our target group.

Expected long term effects

At start of project we could get a factory prototype in a few weeks, though we had no access to Bill of Materials the lamp was more expensive than we anticipated and the communication with factory engineers was not clear. With our new producer we have overview of cost and quality, which is necessary for the project, since we need to keep costs down. We have got important information and positive feedback from the field studies, and are in touch with distributor.

Approach and implementation

The project has a new producer and we have new competent collaborators: industrial designer with long experience of China and skilled lens designers. Development and testing has been more time consuming than expected, especially to get a BoM. The project is often well received, and we are thankful for all help that has been offered to us. The process has taken longer time but we have gained a lot of knowledge.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
