Important results from the project

The aim of Kirunabo has been to develop and test different types of meeting points on the basis of needs and interests of the target groups (youths and parents on parental leave) and by doing so, explore how these meeting points can contribute to countervailing segregation. The aim has also been to improve and extended the civil dialogue where more people can make their voices heard and contribute to the city transformation. The project has used social innovation labs to gather knowledge and experience on how different meeting points and activities can contribute to a more inclusive Kiruna.

Expected long term effects

The work of Kirunabo has primarily resulted in activities within seven main tracks: Arctic farming, Studio of Ideas, Playful meeting point, Food & Talks, Play Hub, Music Creation and Social Innovation with youths. The project has filled some physical, as well as social, voids in Kiruna´s public spaces. A number of meeting points have emerged from the work of Kirunabo which have been requested and appreciated by visitors. The project has increased peoples sense of participation and possibilities to impact, helped people make reality of their ideas and strengthened the local community.

Approach and implementation

The activities have been developed mainly through two methods. In the first method, the project´s employees independently run the lab and in collaboration with other actors carry out the activities based on knowledge and points of view gathered from the target groups. The second method is based on the so-called "lab starters", residents of Kiruna who themselves come up with ideas they wanted to test, who get help from Kirunabo to realize their innovations. A norm critical perspective has been present in the activities in order to create as inclusive and open meeting points as possible.
