Important results from the project
The project has aimed to 1) give an overview of various IoT projects within the public sector in Northern Europe 2) help build the brand IoT Sweden, and 3) constitute an international comparison. The objective of the project was to give IoT Sweden a better picture of how Swedish municipalities compare internationally and create a basis for potential collaborations and dissemination of results. The project has fulfilled both purpose and objectives by mapping and continuously reporting how IoT creates social benefits globally and in which areas IoT has been introduced and why.
Expected long term effects
The project has delivered an in-depth mapping of the Nordic countries´ municipal IoT use and thereby contributed to creating an understanding of in which areas and how IoT creates societal benefits in the individual municipalities and how such investments are coordinated and organized within the different countries. Through our mapping, we have also contributed to increasing the visibility of IoT Sweden in the other Nordic countries. Furthermore, the project has delivered an international comparison and charted smart city initiatives and technology platforms.
Approach and implementation
The project has mapped IoT use in 335 municipalities in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Estonia. Interviews have been conducted both by phone and e-mail. Furthermore, public sector IoT use within countries such as the United States, England and the Netherlands, as well as a number of global smart city initiatives, have been researched, to obtain a clear picture of how IoT has created societal benefits, and of the opportunities and challenges that the public sector sees with IoT. The project has been conducted in continuous dialogue with the program office for IoT Sweden
