Important results from the project
The project has achieved its objective to evaluate the benefits of green roofs and these insights will be useful in future urban planning. During the project, it became clear that a challenge for the municipality is to identify an area´s actual needs and desired climate effect. This led to a certain shift in focus where the project has also developed an AI-driven planning tool that compares local data with sustainability strategies to recommend climate measures in an area.
Expected long term effects
The project has given Järfälla and private developers a deeper understanding of the benefits of green roofs, which affects how these can be planned for in future urban development. The project´s insights are also expected to have an impact on how municipalities work with data-driven area planning. Together with 12 other municipalities, the project intend to further develop the aforementioned planning tool in order to more effectively integrate sustainability aspects into the planning of a city.
Approach and implementation
The project maintained a well-balanced schedule and budget, with excellent collaboration between the parties. However, priorities shifted over time due to technical and legal challenges related to sensor development and placement, as well as a deeper understanding of the challenges municipalities face in integrating sustainability issues into urban development. These challenges stem largely from a complex strategic landscape and a functional organizational structure with diverse objectives.
