Important results from the project
The project intends to develop a prototype/demonstration unit of an intelligent bolt. The aim is to prove that it is possible to measure the elongation of a bolt and translate it into an axial force and wirelessly communicate the result to an analyzing system. The goal is to create a bolt with integrated electronic components for measurement and communication that measures the elongation of a bolt when tightened and translate it into an axial force and wirelessly transmit the result to a tablet / smartphone. The project is completed and testing is ongoing.
Expected long term effects
The objectives of the project have been achieved. The electrical components of the measuring extension / force as well as wireless communications are in place and can measure bolt elongation during tightening and communicate the results wirelessly. Thus, it is proven that it is possible to build an intelligent screw. The result is that it is possible to conduct tests for the further development and demonstrations for sales / investment purposes. The expectation is facilitated sales, facilitated investments, as well as test feedback for further development.
Approach and implementation
The project´s approach has been to develop: 1) Lab Tests 2) Cavity design 3) Electronics 4) Mechanical design. The project´s objective has been achieved. The choice of employees and skills have been right, however, more consulting firms were hired during the project than what was planned in order to meet targets and deadlines. It has been difficult to buy sufficient time from consultants with high expertise. The price of the necessary electronic components fell more than expected and increased in performance throughout the project.
