Important results from the project
In this project we developed, verified and validated an innovative 4D radar sensor for autonomous mining applications. The radar design is based on a state-of-the-art concept that enables detection and classification of targets in 4D, i.e., target´s position in 3D and its speed as the fourth dimension, in dust and other environmental conditions.
Expected long term effects
The main expected outcome of this project to achieve 4D detection capability using our state-of-the-art method is accomplished. We showed that the radar can find the target´s position and velocity using a simplified HW and SW design. Moreover, our calibration procedure significantly improves the accuracy of sensing. As the ultimate goal of this project, we demoed the radar 4D functionality to potential customers and received positive feedback for taking the next steps.
Approach and implementation
The initial goal of the project to finalize the first radar prototype with 4D detection capability was fulfilled. We built a calibration setup to accurately calibrate and measure the angular error for each radar HW. We have also developed the radar signal processing algorithms for adaptive detection and tracking of objects in short range applications.
