Important results from the project

In the project ´Intelligent Energy Use´ we have begun a long-term cross-sector industrial cooperation on standardization of platforms and commercialization of Internet-based energy and emergency services for homes and buildings. By showing how easy it is to define a robust, open communication platform a number of major players have been persuaded to invest in an open solution as an alternative to all the proprietary technologies that currently dominate the market for energy and emergency services.

Expected long term effects

We have defined, tested and made important progress in international standardization of an open service platform that is easy to integrate in heating systems, fans, alarm systems, and other home technology. The technology is easy to learn, implement and use. It is a fully distributed solution and needs no designated central operator. The platform makes it easy for independent developers to build attractive services that works with different suppliers without complicated customization and makes the market for Internet -based home services more interesting.

Approach and implementation

Close cooperation in a number of steering group meetings, technology and business model workshops, bilateral technology adaptation, joint efforts in test installations and field tests, the partners developed a common understanding of different business models and their conditions, and an interest in open, Internet-based platforms as a way to promote the market for energy and emergency services. An open, standardized platform prevents lock-in and creates a common market for technologies and services that will result in larger supply, lower prices and greater consumer benefits.
