Project duration August 2016 - July 2019
Status Completed
Venture The strategic innovation programme for Swedish mining and metal producing industry - SIP Swedish Mining Innovation

Important results from the project

The purpose of the project was to ensure the quality of products based on iron-silicate slag through deepened knowledge on parameters that influences the environmental and technical properties of the slag and potential new application areas. Results from bench- and full scale trials show potential new application areas through modification of the slag composition. Fundamental understanding of phases and conditions that have an impact on leaching contributes to quality assured products in addition to the constructed testbed for ageing studies.

Expected long term effects

Results from lab scale tests show that hydraulic properties can be achieved through modification of the slag composition, which open new application areas. Extensive characterization has contributed to enhanced knowledge of different phase’s contribution to leaching during various conditions. These studies in combination with data from the testbed will contribute to assurance of qualitative slag products. Outcome of the project will contribute to a resource efficient use of raw materials.

Approach and implementation

The project has been carried out in close collaboration between the participants. Fundamental studies has been conducted as a PhD study, a licentiate thesis will be presented based on the studies within the project. Planning, conducting and evaluation of full scale trials have been carried out in collaboration between the participating partners. Prior full scale trials theoretical calculations and lab scale trials was conducted as an aid for planning. Collaboration will continue among other to follow up results from the test bed and for on-line measurements.
