Call Challenge-Driven Innovation stage 1 initiation – 2019

Important results from the project

Within this first stage, different processes within the industrial partners sites were mapped including the water usage and water treatment facilities already implemented. This allowed us to identify the alternatives or options for recirculation of water in the metal processes. Some of the most important parameters concerning the water quality have been detected. A state of the art for analysis and sensoring of these parameters was realized as well as a state of the art for the different water treatment technologies.

Expected long term effects

Smart recirculation of water within the manufacturing industry allows a better control of the water quality used in the processes and efficient use of water. This increases the performance of the process fluids and the lifetime of the process baths which is translated in a reduction of consumption of tap water by recirculation and by a better use of the water resources. Chemical free techniques for water treatment and prolongation of the process baths lifetime minimizes or decreases the usage of chemicals and generation of waste.

Approach and implementation

Two workshops/meetings were organized with the participating organizations for discussion of project goals, activities and results. Visits to the manufacturing facilities of the industrial partners were done during the project to analyze the metal processes studied in the project. Literature and market analysis were done as part of the state of the state of the art for analysis, sensoring and water treatments. Finally, an open workshop was done to present and analyse results, outline for step II application and invite potential new participants to step II project.
