Purpose and goal

The INDYE project targets the recycling of ambient light in indoor environments using solar cells. Our focus is to create environmentally friendly concepts to power small electrical devices indoors, eliminating the dependence on batteries. Dye-sensitized solar cells have very good performance under diffuse light. We will develop these solar cells with improved optical matching with artificial light sources and maximum voltage at low illumination. We also strive to improve the environmental friendliness of indoor-PV by using non-toxic and recyclable materials.

Expected effects and result

(1) To increase the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells for indoor PV applications to >45%, where the theoretical limit is 60%. (2) To create environmentally-friendly, cost-efficient, and optimized components and structures for DSC devices that are suitable for market applications. (3) Fabrication of serial and parallel mini-modules, application in demonstrator systems and life-cycle analysis.

Planned approach and implementation

All components in the solar cells will be improved or newly developed to suit indoor use and low light intensities: new dyes, optimized redox electrolytes and hole conductors, better counter contacts. Advanced characterization and modeling will give new insight into these solar cells and give feedback to component development. Prototypes, mini-modules and demonstrators will give insight in producibility, stability and practical application. The industrial and environmental aspects of the dye-sensitized solar cell sand modules will be assessed.
