Important results from the project
The project´s aim was to create a global indoor positioning service which gives much better accuracy than existing services (eg Combains current global positioning service, CPS, and Google GeoLocation). For the service to work globally, it requires that all learning and calibration is done automatically based on the crowdsourced data. In this project, innovative algorithms were developed and validated on a large amount of data from different types of buildings. With the new algorithms at least twice as good accuracy was achieved compared to earlier methods for indoor environments.
Expected long term effects
The project has succeeded in developing new innovative algorithms to automatically create radio models and then use these together with the measured radio data when calculating the indoor location of a mobile device. Implementation of these algorithms in Combains Positioning Systems (CPS) are ongoing and commercial launch is planned for the end of 2015. Combain see an increasing international interest and plans for growth both in turnover and number of employees. A patent application has been submitted and scientific articles are scheduled for publication during the year.
Approach and implementation
The project was implemented by a project team consisting of Combain Mobile AB and researcher at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Lund University. Mathematics Centre developed the basic algorithms and verified them in Matlab. Combain created real test data and verified algorithms against this data. The project team sat together in the Mathematics Centre´s premises, which has led to rapid iterations, and good project results in a relatively short time.
