Important results from the project

The overall aim of the project was to improve companies’ innovation capability by increasing their ability for efficient development of integrated solutions, focusing companies that traditionally have developed physical products. An integrated solution is a physical product that is sold together with a number of different services. The project has contributed to knowledge development by identifying a number of challenges that companies face, mainly related to organization and processes, and developed proposals for how these can be handled.

Expected long term effects

In the project a number of problems and challenges have been identified, such as the importance of letting product development personnel think of services before the product is fully developed. But also that the product and service development processes must be synchronized, as well as the need for a platform approach in the development for fulfilling needs of different customers efficiently. This has made a positive contribution to the companies in their continued servitization. The project results have been disseminated through both scientific and popular science publications.

Approach and implementation

The project has been a collaboration between Chalmers and Karlstad University, and has mainly been conducted as a literature study, and deeper case studies at Volvo Lastvagnar and Ascom. A large number of interviews have been conducted in the companies, but we have also followed projects for the development of new integrated solutions through participatory observations in project meetings. The results have been disseminated internally in the companies through workshops and project presentations, but also externally through workshops with participants also from other companies.
