Purpose and goal

The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions from asphalt production by using plant-based oil to replace part of the fossil-based bitumen and by using recycled asphalt material. The results will contribute to reduced CO2 emissions and could ultimately lead to asphalt production with zero emissions. The goal is to build test road sections of asphalt pavements with these types of asphalt mixtures to evaluate their long-term properties.

Expected effects and result

The project evaluates the long-term performance of asphalt pavements containing bio-extended bituminous binder and recycled asphalt under actual field conditions. The results will provide the Swedish Transport Administration, municipalities and the asphalt industry with important knowledge about these mixtures. This knowledge will facilitate and improve the procurement processes for both the Swedish Transport Administration and municipalities when it comes to these types of asphalt mixtures.

Planned approach and implementation

VTI, Nynas, NCC, Skanska and KTH participate in this project with their unique roles and expertise, which facilitates the implementation of the project. VTI coordinates and leads the project and carries out initial measurements to establish homogeneous test sections. NCC industry builds the test sections. Skanska contributes with technical support. Nynas and KTH provide technical support regarding material selection and conduct laboratory tests. The project runs from November 2024 to May 2026.
