Important results from the project

The objective of this project was to increase the effectiveness, efficiency and transparency of the Industrial Symbiosis (IS) system in Sotenäs by implementing the Internet of Things (IoT). To fulfil this objective the project has developed an IoT platform that has enabled the connection of the critical flows of the IS system. The platform also has a frontend that facilitated data visualization from low to high-level aggregation. The platform is flexible and scalable which has the capability of acting as an IoT Hubb for a larger community if needed.

Expected long term effects

This flexible and scalable IoT platform for IS system will make the system and the involved companies more resource-effective. Since IoT implementation in an IS system is a completely new and innovative approach, this makes the IS system in Sotenäs a leading example, which expected to motivate others to follow. It can serve as the benchmark and contribute to sustainable growth, better social environment and create new jobs and economic activities as the IS system may evolve to become more competitive.

Approach and implementation

The project has built its developments upon the existing knowledge and experiences and has worked continuously to build awareness among relevant stakeholders on the need for IoT in IS systems and improved the platform after the users demands. The project has also given enough emphasis to analyze the business and upscaling potential of the platform. On the weaker side the reluctance to data sharing (although the data has no potential business or confidentially risk) and security risk have been the main concern for most of the partners involved.
