Important results from the project
iGEM Uppsala 2013 succeeded with a well-performed a research project in the field of synthetic biology and to represent Uppsala and Sweden in iGEM. We also awoke peoples interest, created a debate and spread knowledge about the new growing research field of synthetic biology. The project idea, a potential super yoghurt with modified extra healthy bacteria also made you think about wether it is good or bad to eat GMO.
Expected long term effects
The research project has had great educational value and provides the participants with theoretical and practical knowledge in the lab. It also provides them with valuable experience such as creating and organising project and how to effectively communicate science. The project also contributed with spreading knowledge about synthetic biology in Uppsala and Sweden and through our participation in the competition in France and in the US we strengthen the view of Sweden as a great nation for education, research and development.
Approach and implementation
Activities like the recruiting of participants, planing of the project as well as a lecture series to high school students started in the spring of 2013. The research project and lab work was mainly performed during the summer and autumn. The work also continued by representation, first at the regional championship in France and then at the world championship at MIT in Boston. In october, Uppsala SynBioDay was also arranged and recieved very positive response. The day will be arranged as an annual event in the future.
