Important results from the project
The purpose of this project was to investigate the potential of a water gel type explosive using hydrogen peroxide as the primary oxidizer in an active production environment. The goals of this project were to assess explosive safety, performance (environmental and blasting), bulk production and financials. Specifically, HP Gel was found to satisfy all aspects environmental & blasting performance goals and the financial aspect of the project. However, in its current gel form the explosive was not compatible with production targets as it required hole lining to stop degradation.
Expected long term effects
Overall, the outcome of the project was very positive, albeit with a result that was not suitable for Boliden in its current form. This is because the project planning and execution was very successful and allowed the Etken/Boliden team to investigate all aspects of HP Gel. Indeed, whilst the project proved that the Gel was not a product suitable for Boliden, it did provide avenues of investigation which will be followed to advance hydrogen peroxide-based explosives and the fantastic environmental advantages such a product provides.
Approach and implementation
Etken is extremely happy with the overall project planning and execution. All aspects of the project were fulfilled. The funding from Vinnova allowed Etken the freedom to ensure that this project could be fully explored, and the HP Gel concept tested to completion, as was done. Etken is very confident that there are no more economical avenues where HP Gel is a viable explosive for a busy mining environment, regardless of the environmental advantages. The project planning also identified that there is significant scope for future development of an HP explosive, just not in water gel form.
