Purpose and goal

The project aim is to develop an intelligent digital twin for planning and coordinating the entire value chain; Hugin & Munin. The digital twin contains two parts; data and planning model, and for it to be scalable and available, the goal is to established it as a cloud service. The goal for the digital twin is to provide an optimal value chain and support LKAB´s own goal of achieving net zero emissions of carbon dioxide by 2045.

Expected effects and result

The project will create a decision support that delivers real benefits and network effects and that extends across the entire supply chain. The more data that is available to decision algorithms, the more efficient Hugin and Munin become. The concept is generic and can be adapted in other complex value chains in other industries, for example the forest industry and the steel industry, but also used as a basis for decisions affecting parts of the value chain, for example authorities, train operators, ports, municipalities, other companies and decisions on regional development.

Planned approach and implementation

The project runs over three years and consists of nine work packages. Initially, data models are developed in the digital twin and an optimization model with solution methods. For this, a cloud service is being developed, including an API for communication between different IT systems. One work package deals with the development of several case studies and another involves the development of user interfaces and change management. The last work package consists of tests and evaluation of the case studies.
