Project duration June 2022 - December 2022
Status Completed
Venture Strategic Innovation Programme on Lightweight

Important results from the project

The goal was to develop and demonstrate weight-saving micro-sandwich technology for bio-based composite materials. In the project, several concepts have been studied and two kayaks have been built as demonstrators. Chosen concept with laminate consisting of thin cork core with surface layer of flax fiber and bio-based epoxy resulted in weight-efficient kayaks with good performance.

Expected long term effects

** Denna text är maskinöversatt ** The project was knowledge building in an innovative area. Developed technology that enables increased performance and reduced weight for bio-based composites is expected to have a positive impact on the competitiveness of participating companies. The majority of the results can be implemented immediately within the participants´ product areas. Continuation projects are planned where the lifespan of the laminates is focused.

Approach and implementation

WP1: Material selection, simplified sustainability study and test plan. WP2: Process trials, manufacturing of test laminates. WP3: Mechanical tests WP4: Demonstration of the technology. Analysis: The developed micro-sandwich technology was demonstrated in two kayaks. Evaluation was made with regard to performance, cost and the sustainability perspective. Communication was carried out via Teams-meetings and participation in practical trials. The documentation consists of a series of Power-points and a report for the sustainability study.
