Important results from the project

The objective of the study was to further evaluate market requirements for the GPS-independent time synchronization protocol developed by Net Insight, namely “Time Transfer”. The technical market study has shown competitiveness, customers´ requirements have been confirmed through interviews where several players show interest in the solution as well as proof-of-concept tests at a Nordic operator with favourable results. Results from the study will contribute to further development, further information is available at www.netinsight.net

Expected long term effects

The solution enables time synchronization of 5G mobile networks over existing telecom networks without demanding upgrades or new investments in network equipment and has built-in mechanisms to handle link and node failures and changes in asymmetries in underlying networks. Time Transfer solution significantly reduces complexity related to rollout and network operations compared to previous approaches, partly due to usage of existing infrastructure, creating easier and faster rollouts, and in many cases a significantly reduced cost.

Approach and implementation

The several methods used during the project have ensured a thorough approach to achieving objectives. The project has had a clear structure for the various parts with defined areas of responsibility. As a result, the project has led to a new and strong relationship between Net Insight and the research division at KTH within the Division of Communication Systems, and the establishment of a good relationship with involved external parties.
