Heterogeneous integration for enhanced mm-wave transmitters

Reference number
Coordinator Gotmic AB
Funding from Vinnova SEK 1 250 000
Project duration May 2017 - April 2021
Status Completed
Venture Competence centre

Important results from the project

Millimeter-wave communication is a key enabler for future and current mobile systems to increase capacity, quality of service and speed. However, current millimeter wave systems are neither energy nor cost-effective. The project has focused on studying solutions to: -Increase the efficiency with the help of analog predistortion circuits. -Evaluate and/or integrate different semiconductor technologies such as GaAs, GaN, and Si CMOS and SiGe BiCMOS. -Evaluate various cost-effective packaging solutions for the above.

Expected long term effects

Gotmic has during the project built up a test setup to measure transmitters and receivers with realistic communication signals. This has been used to evaluate the analog predistortion circuits that have been designed and fabricated within the project. We have studied various technologies and understanding in how and then they can be used. Various packaging solutions have been studied and are now the basis for product development at Gotmic. We see great interest from several large and small customers in both the EU and the US, which can lead to volume products in a relatively short time.

Approach and implementation

The project has been implemented as a long-term development project in a similar way as other smaller projects at Gotmic with checks, internal planning schedules and milestones. The project has generated many interesting and usable results. We are now looking at the project structure and how we can integrate reporting with VINNOVA as a more natural part of our project, so that it fits into our project management model. This is to be able to report in good time and have a good overview of project that are publicly funded. With that said, however, the actual work within the project has gone well.

The project description has been provided by the project members themselves and the text has not been looked at by our editors.
