Important results from the project
The purpose and goal of the project was to build and develop a sustainable infrastructure (publishing framework and / or API) based on persistent URIs for publishing data sources as open data. Also to gain experience in publishing open data sources was an important factor. SGU has published 6 different data sources within this framework / API from our groundwater databases. From these data sources 6 are available as JSON and 5 data sources are also published as CSV. Publishing has been made by Atom feeds/API with accompanying product documentation and URIs for requests and download.
Expected long term effects
The project has resulted in a more automatic process for updating and publishing data in open, standardized and machine readable formats. Data sources are published in a beta version as Atom feeds / API at resource.sgu.se/oppnadata. Increased technical skills and experience about different technical solutions has also benefitted us. We have indications of an increased usage and simplifyed data delivery process which was another expected effect of the project.
Approach and implementation
The project was divided into different activities performed with some overlap. After an inventory of data sources to be published the following activities were performed per data source. 1. Processing and conversion of data into the appropriate format, at least two different formats. 2. Development of framework for publishing. 3. Test was conducted in parallel with development. 4. Documentation of the framework / API and documentation of the data sources. 5. Publishing of the data sources as open data.
