Important results from the project
We have reached to link innovations in design and electronic component selection with recycling processes. The majority of the products we evaluated have not yet reached such large collection volumes that clear improvement can be shown. Clearly, the technology shift to non-mercury-containing lamps and backlighting gives a different design. Knowledge exchange that took place about the recycling processes and production processes gives more efficient use of resources. Design depends on both the function and possible production methods
Expected long term effects
Good contact with the producer and now know what knowledge they have about the content of their circuit boards. If a BOM (bill of material) or FMD (Full material declaration) do not follow a standard, it is difficult to use it. That the partner responsible for the identification of PCB in the recycling process had to leave the project during the last year meant that we could not get good results and impact of using the BOM / FMD. Since special interest was for metals in circuit boards that today are not recycled in an optimal way, we lack necessary results needed to assess the new technology.
Approach and implementation
Project set-up was very good with clear targets and milestones. However, the project was too wide to be optimal. The product stride cycle that would fit in the project became too long. For us recycler difficult to obtain samples from producers for larger tests. We would evaluate where the new products that have not yet collected as waste. And that an important part gets us could not be implemented was very negative as a whole. With positive was the exchange of knowledge with designers of producers and their suppliers. Actual situations were discussed and concrete results achieved.
