Purpose and goal
Our food should not eat our food. Instead, the animals should be fed things that we cannot or do not want to eat ourselves. A feed where the main ingredient is insects raised on residual streams from the food industry becomes both circular and sustainable. We have achieved this on a pilot scale for farmed fish and now we want to take the sustainable fish feed to the next step and ensure continuous production. Thanks to changed rules within the EU, we have the opportunity to expand the project to also include feed for poultry and pigs in order to achieve even greater environmental benefits.
Expected effects and result
The societal challenge we address is the linear, resource-inefficient flows that today´s food system is based on. The goal is Swedish circular feed for the next generation of environmentally friendly food available in stores and restaurants. Today´s feed recipe is based on feed tables. Supplementing these with new and circular feedstuffs therefore becomes a sub-goal for the project and a direct support to the industry. Nutritional values, sustainability values, prices and availability will be published and be open data ready to be fed into industry databases.
Planned approach and implementation
The project will be implemented through work with a large number of partners. The overall objective is to support the development of a Swedish circular feed for the next generation of environmentally friendly food. A practical goal is to reach end products to the consumer for all animal species. The project will work based on a set schedule and regular reconciliations. The project group has worked together in previous project and has good communication and a flat organization which has proven successful in achieving the objective set.
