Important results from the project

The aim is to increase the capacity of lithium ion batteries. The goal with the project, which was reached, was to show that graphene´s unique electrical and mechanical properties can facilitate higher silicon content with good cyclability. The project has initiated a value chain, and the need for new actors, such as anode producers, cell manufactures and batterie suppliers, have been identified. Yet another aim was to understand how silicon and graphene affect recycling. No specific problems could be identified.

Expected long term effects

The result, an 30% increase in capacity even after 200 cycles, will be further developed in a larger research project. The cyclability needs to be more investigated and an applications for funding have been sent to Vinnova. If the same good results can be show after 2000 cycles we consider it a break through. A more long term goal is of course commercialization of the concept and contact are ongoing with various stake holders.

Approach and implementation

The project had one experimental part, one part dealing with the value chain and one part investigating recyclability. The experimental part gave "proof-of concet" for the technology while the initiation of the value chain and the recycling study, givs support to future commercialization.
